WE ARE RIOJA
Making wine is our way of life. It is neither a hobby nor a whim.
Because we make our living from this, every day, all the year round.
It doesn’t matter if it’s hot, raining or foggy. The vineyard does not rest.
The vine is a living, complex being, changing each day, which must be looked after but also understood.
Our work consists of anticipating how it will grow according to the weather that year, or that month or that week. There is constant change. The plant must be looked after to give its best fruit.
We at Bodegas Virgen de la Vega are 300 farming families bound by a common idea of life: creating pure Rioja wines.
Wines to celebrate and to escape. Wines for sharing joy, and also sadness. Wines for living.
On 26 June 1965, 67 of our families came together to launch a common life project: a wine cooperative.
We founded it in Haro, capital of the Rioja, and named it Virgen de la Vega, patron saint of the town.
Since that time, not only do we contribute to our community by looking after vineyards and making wines: we invigorate rural life.
For all these reasons, we say that We are Haro.
Our cooperative is made up of 300 families. All of us live in 12 villages and hamlets in the hinterland of Haro.
Anguciana, Briones, Casalarreina, Cihuri, Foncea, Fonzaleche, Gimileo, Haro, Ochánduri, Rodezno, Villalba de Rioja and Zarratón.
The cooperative has succeeded in maintaining and attracting life to these places.
The average age of the people comprising Bodegas Virgen de la Vega is 40-45.
The generational handover from parents to children has mostly taken place.
20% of the cooperative’s members are women.
Some left and came back, while others of us never left.
We live here and raise our children here.
We work our own land and bring prosperity and life to our villages. We help to invigorate life in rural areas.
