In addition to being the most northerly Rioja vineyards, their average height is nearly 700 metres.
Over our 850 hectares of land, we have a wide variety of soils and even microclimates.
The Rioja Alta, the zone where the Virgen de la Vega vines grow, is characterised by an Atlantic climate.
This is a climate of mild temperatures and moderate rainfall.
In winter, the minimum temperatures are usually around 4º, except in mountainous areas where they dip below 0º. In summer, the maximum temperatures do not normally exceed 22º.
The soils where we plant our grapes are mostly clayey-chalky.
This kind of soil nurtures wines with more body that are fuller in the mouth. We also have vineyards close to the river with alluvial soils, which produce lighter wine.
Thanks to this variety of microclimates and soils, our wines have a multitude of nuances and are characterised by their diversity.
All the Bodegas Virgen de la Vega vineyards are planted with two of the most traditional Rioja varieties: Tempranillo and Viura.
At Virgen de la Vega, we make all our wines exclusively from these two grapes.
Our cooperative’s founders chose them because they are the most typical Rioja varieties, so that they knew exactly how to handle and work with them to get the best out of them and produce wines of excellent quality.
